MATTHEUS BLANSHAN, father of
Elizabeth Blanshan Louw (also Low) was born around 1651 in Noeville, French Flanders, to Mattheus and
Magdeleine Joire Blanshan . Her parents had emigrated to Germany to escape the persecution of
Huguenots in their native France. Elizabeth was 9 years old when Mattheus and Magdeleine Blanshan
came to America on the "Gilded Otter," arriving in New Amsterdam (New York City) April 26, 1660. Elizabeth
married Pieter Cornelisse Louw of Holstein on October 27, 1668 at Frankenthal, four miles from
Mannheim. Pieter had come to America in February, 1659 aboard "The Faith". Pieter Louw died in 1691.
Elizabeth and Pieter had the following children:
Cornelis - born 1670. Cornelis or Cornelius lived in Esopus. He married Margaret Borsum, daughter of
Tymen Van Borsum, a cordwainer from New York, on July 5, 1695.
Magdalene - born 1672
Matthys - born 1674
Peter - born 1678. Peter married Rachel Roosevelt, daughter of Nicholas Roosevelt on August 8, 1721.
Marytje - born around 1686
Antje - born 1681.
